Introduction

We travel to the geographical sights of Spitzkoppe and  onto the Skeleton Coast National Park.  Heading inland via Grootberg with it’s fantastic views of the surrounds and to Etosha National Park with its wealth of fauna and flora, your game viewing experiences continue as we visit the AfriCat Foundation and a private reserve before traveling south into the Kalahari area of Namibia, down to the Fish River Canyon, ending in the coastal town of Luderitz (from where flight connections can be made to Windhoek or Cape Town).

    This program was designed to collect guests at the coast, for those flying into Walvis Bay. We can of course collect travellers in Windhoek as well. Our guide will travel through from Windhoek to the coast and meet with you at lunchtime, afternoon at leisure in Swakopmund.

Day 2: Spitzkoppe

Day Itinerary

    Swakopmund – Spitzkoppe (via Cape Cross Seal Reserve)

  • Distance:

  • Journey:

    We travel northwards along the coastline passing Wlotzkasbaken with its colourful houses, to Henties Bay. We’ll stop at the lichen fields before arriving at Cape Cross which has both historic and biological significance. The Portuguese navigator, Diego Cão, landed here in 1486 on his second expedition south of the equator and planted a stone cross (padrão) to mark his journey. This reserve is a sanctuary for the world’s largest breeding colony of Cape fur seals, with up to 210 000 seals present during the breeding season in November and December. Return to Henties Bay and head off through the gravel plains of the Namib to Spitzkoppe, known as the Matterhorn of Namibia. Sunrise and sunset showcase this area in the best light with ample opportunity to capture the contrast of light and shadow. All around the Spitzkoppe hundreds of rock paintings can be found and The Rock Arch is a well-known formation. Your guide will take you on an afternoon walk in the area.

Day 3: Grootberg

    Leaving Spitzkoppe we wend our way further into the Damaraland region, via the abandoned mining town of Uis. Passing the Brandberg Mountain we arrive at Twylfelfontein, a spectacularly scenic area, featuring one of the largest and most important concentrations of rock art in Africa. A short journey takes us up the Grootberg Pass on onto our Lodge for overnight.

Day Itinerary

    Strong walk boots as we set off rangers in search of the desert rhino and other game species that may be found in this area. Grootberg Lodge Rhino Tracking involves guests being taken on an unforgettable exploration on foot amidst the cliffs of the Klip River Valley and rising plateau of volcanic basalt ridges, by dedicated guides and local trackers. The activity is managed, and the number of guests participating is restricted to a maximum of 10 people per day, to ensure that it is both natural and non-obtrusive for the animals.

    We travel through the communal farmlands and low rock formations to the town of Kamanjab the town functions as a minor service centre for northern Damaraland. A short drive takes us to the town of Outjo, this is an area of livestock ranches. This town is always ‘buzzing’ as a gateway to Etosha National Park, Skeleton Coast and Damaraland. The Outjo Backerei Bakery is famous in the region for fresh tasty German pastries and coffee. We’ll have a short stop here before proceeding on to arrive, in time for lunch, in Etosha National Park.  A short game drive  on arrival - an afternoon game drive will be done in touring vehicle.

Day Itinerary

    Route: Etosha – game drive

  • Journey:

    Up before dawn, we need to be at the entrance gates when they open, one of the best times for game viewing is the cooler morning hours and late afternoon.  We make use of today on an extensive game drive in search of black and white rhino, elephants, lion, cheetah and the numerous species of plains game.  The drive will give you an overview of the National Park including its birdlife, flora and geology.

Day Itinerary

    Okaukuejo - Namutoni

  • Distance:

    Game drive

  • Journey:

    today will be flexible, the day can unfold by heading out at dawn into the Okaukuejo area for a game drive, returning for breakfast before packing the vehicle and heading off towards Namutoni.  Alternatively up early, pack vehicle, quick breakfast and head off.  Our guide will advise on the best option for the day once there as weather and game viewing opportunities vary day to day. Lunch will be taken at the most central of the Resorts, Halali, before travelling to Namutoni for overnight.

Day 9: Okonjima Reserve

    Leaving the Etosha National Park behind us we travel via the mining town of Tsumeb and south to Otjiwarongo.  We aim to arrive at Okonjima just after lunch so as you can participate in the afternoon endangered species game drive.

    After our visit to the AfriCat Centre we take a leisurely drive to Erindi Nature Reserve arriving in time to settle in and have lunch before heading out on an afternoon nature drive in this Reserve that stretches over 79000 hectares, has magnificent landscapes encompassing grasslands, savannah, and rugged mountains inhabited by an abundance of diverse wildlife. You may wish to jump on a night drive to catch a glimpse of the nocturnal species that thrive in the dark wilderness (optional extra).

    Early departure from Erindi as we travel to Okahandja and through the city of Windhoek to Rehoboth, our destination for today is a private Reserve situated on the edge of the southern Kalahari are of Namibia, this is an area of mixed tree and shrub savannah crisscrossed by red sand dunes – quite different to the Namib Desert.  During the afternoon we will take an afternoon nature drive in the Reserve where we hope to see various antelope species, ostrich, zebra and if lucky meerkats

    We travel down to Keetmanshoop whose original population reaches back to the end of the 18th century.  Our destination is the Fish River Canyon, the largest canyon in Africa and forms part of the Ai-Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park.   

Day 13: Luderitz

    Our travels today take us to the coastal town of Luderitz nestling between the Namib Desert and south Atlantic.  During 1908 a black worker Zacharias Lewala found a diamond during his work at the narrow-gauge railway, this led to a diamond rush which turned Lüderitz into a very wealthy town. As the diamonds petered out the town lost most of its importance and today Luderitz has a lucrative fishing industry.

Day 14: Duwiseb Castle

    Today we travel to the settlement of Aus and across to Duwiseb Castle which is replete with history and romance. The Castle was built by a German army officer for his American bride in the early 1900s. Apart from being a gift of love, Duwisib Castle was a dream turned into reality for the Baron who had planned on breeding horses in this semi-desert environment. Sadly, he was killed during the First World War. His wife left for America, never to return, leaving the castle and all of its contents and dreams behind.
